Stress and Intonation in English
This was a 2-hour workshop for the Semester 2 PISMP students at IPGKDRI. With 132 students, the workshop was held in the 'DUO', a tiered lecture hall, not really the sort of set-up I prefer for a workshop.
I decided to try to involve all of the students using 'icons'.
I printed out four sets of little pictures, just clip-art type things, then I cut them up and stuck one on the first inside page of each workbook I had created. The icons were all mixed up, so no one had the same as the person next to them, and there were four of each scattered around the room.
I then inserted icons at strategic points in my PowerPoint presentation, whenever I wanted someone to come down and answer a question or have a go at a task.
The looks on their faces every time they saw an icon appear was just classic! We all had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs even with such a big group.
I told them there would be an exam at the end. For the 'exam' I again used the icons and had several students come down and read sentences which included relevant stress and intonation. There were 2 students reading each sentence, and the others had to choose whether 'A' was correct, or 'B'. or both correct, or neither.
Photos of the workshop can be seen on the PHOTOS 2012 page.
